Recently I was having a discussion with a team on a document they produced.

Before I launched into my feedback, I wanted to make sure I understood what the goals and purpose of the document were.

“What do you mean our goals?”

What do you want to achieve with this document?

After a bit of back and forth we got to what the purpose and goal of the document was and that helped me understand where they were coming from – but we had to get there.

In anything you do, there is a goal, there is a purpose and if you know it ahead of time, it can go much faster then you’d ever expect.  This includes knowing who your audience is and what they are looking to get out of your work.

Save yourself some time, start when you know your goal, it’ll clarify your work in the process.
